Ringwood Society was delighted to present its Design and Conservation Awards at the Autumn Open Meeting on October 18th 2022.

Two awards were given, one for a residential property and one for a commercial building.

Residential Award

The award for a residential property went to Sheerin Bettle for their careful restoration of the chimneys on top of Clarks Alms Houses located on the Quomp.  It was noticed that the chimneys had become a reddish colour and on closer inspection it became apparent that they were unstable and in immediate danger of falling down.

Ringwood United Charities, who oversee the Grade II listed building made the decision to undertake a complex conservation project.  The project was undertaken by James Loader of Sheerin Bettle architecture in Ringwood.

As part of the project bespoke moulds were created and the materials were carefully sourced so that they were as close as possible to those used in the original chimneys.

Whilst the chimneys are currently paler than the older ones, it is anticipated that the colour will change over time.

Commercial Award

The award for the commercial property went to the recently opened Ground Coffee House for their sympathetic frontage, understated signage and classic design.

The wooden painted frontage and the projecting, hanging sign are great examples of the design encouraged in Ringwood’s Conservation Area.
