Design and Conservation Awards Rules

The Ringwood Society Design and Conservation Awards scheme identities good new design and worthy conservation and enhancement schemes throughout the parish of Ringwood. The giving of awards brings recognition to the best schemes the town has to offer in each yearly cycle.

Categories

There are three categories:

Best Residential Award

Given to the best residential project of any type, be that renovation, extension, new build or a development, for either a private individual or developer led scheme.

Best Commercial Award

Given to the best commercial project, i.e. relating to commercial premises such as shops, offices, industrial and the like.

Best Community Award

Given to the best project for a community facility; be that built or landscape led which benefits the residents of the town. This can include street furniture, landscaping schemes or publicly accessible community facilities.

Criteria

Whilst there are no set criteria in respect of what constitutes an award winning scheme, the decision on this is at the discretion of the committee, there are some general areas which are considered when reviewing nominations.

Consistency and quality of design. The promotion of the highest level of design quality is a key part of the Society’s work and our awards are intended to showcase this.

The quality of materials and detailing. Traditional materials are always welcomed where appropriate to the design, particularly in works to historic buildings.

The quality of execution and craftsmanship. Projects which employ traditional skills are an excellent way of ensuring these skills don’t die out and the Society particularly welcomes this.

Nominated schemes must fall within the boundaries of the parish of Ringwood, including those areas of the parish within the New Forest National Park. An exception may be made for a truly exceptional scheme in a neighbouring parish, but this is solely at the discretion of the committee.

The scheme should have been completed within the preceding 12 months.

Nominations

Nominations will open at the presentation event for the awards each year and will close at 5pm on the first day of September the following year.

Nominations can be made by committee members, ordinary members of the Society and members of the public and are to be made by email.

Judging

The judging panel is to be convened by the Chair of The Ringwood Society and will generally comprise of members of The Society committee, but may also include Society members or external co-opted experts, if required.

There is no limit to the number of awards which can be made in any year, nor does The Society have to make an award for each category every year if there are no suitable schemes completed within the relevant timeframe.

As well as awards, the judging panel have the opportunity to commend schemes which do not meet the level required for an award, but which the panel still feel merit mention, in order to preserve the high standard of award winning schemes.

Presentation

The presentation of the awards is made at the Autumn Open Meeting of The Ringwood Society and will be given by either the Society President, Chair, town Mayor or Deputy Mayor, if either of the last two are members of the committee. Should none of these be available, the committee may select either a committee member or appropriate external person to present the awards.

Award winners will receive a framed certificate and clients, architects/designers and main contractors will be invited to receive these as The Society deems appropriate. Winners will receive one years single membership to The Ringwood Society. Winners will take part in a photo call at the Autumn Open Meeting and a separate in situ photo call at their project, both of which are for press and Society purposes.
